Advocacy
Greater Madison Music City (GMMC)
Stemming from our Task Force on Equity in Music and Entertainment recommendations, Greater Madison Music City serves as a collective impact project working toward a music ecosystem for the Greater Madison Area that provides equity in entertainment and access for all.
Greater Madison Music City aims to align artists, promoters, venues, educators, music production companies, and audiences, in order to strategize for equity among all members of our music ecosystem in the Greater Madison Area. Through these connections, Greater Madison Music City hopes to deliver policy solutions to protect, support, and preserve our music community, using the power of music to create a more inclusive and diverse landscape in Madison, and beyond.
Task Force on Equity in Music and Entertainment (TFEME)
Though our city is full of talented musicians, there are very few professional musicians due to a lack of local infrastructure and opportunity. For Hip-Hop musicians, access and equity are two additional roadblocks preventing economic growth as many venues ban Hip-Hop music.
Though our research has shown live Hip-Hop events to be no more (and in some cases less) prone to incidents than other genres, Hip-Hop events have been unfairly targeted and banned in local venues.
For years, UCAN has worked towards the goal of equal enforcement and equal consequences. The introduction of the Task Force on Equity in Music and Entertainment is the result of years of hard work and advocacy.
